It doesn’t matter why you’re in a bad mood. They happen for many different reasons, maybe gambling-related, maybe not. Whatever the reason, the list below will help you lift your mood.
1: Go for a walk outside
You might be sat in the living room, curled up on the sofa, wrapped up in a blanky with the curtains drawn and the internet staring you in the face, but you don’t have to be.
And when you’re in a bad mood, hanging around in a dingy room will do you no favours. Instead, science says to just get up and go for a walk. It can instantly improve your mood. If you don’t think you can manage it, read this and this for some helpful tips to get you moving.
It’s common knowledge by now that walking improves your health, but did you know that it also improves your brain? It increases the amount of blood going to the brain, and that will bring you all sorts of benefits, e.g., more nutrients to help make those feel-good neurotransmitters, dopamine and serotonin.
And, if you can get out into nature (rather than walking around a concrete jungle), it’s even better. There’s plenty of research about the importance of green space exercise and more research is coming out all the time.
In fact, you should expect “green space exercise” to become a buzzword within the health industry in the not too distant future.

- Improves mental health, including self-esteem and mood.

- Boosts vitamin D
Anecdotally, I always feel brilliant after a lovely walk outside – wind, rain, snow or sun, I love it!
But where to go?
There are two apps/websites that I use to find good places to walk:
- Alltrails – this is brilliant. People upload walking trails (plotted on a map that you can open in Google Maps) and provide useful details about the walk. There’s lots of information on there, e.g., length of walk, difficulty, whether it’s a circular walk or a there and back walk, good for dogs/kids/aunties. Other people will then rate the walk and leave comments about things the rest of us will find interesting. It’s great.
- Footpath Map – this is like Google Maps, but for footpaths. It’s great and it shows all the ones that GM misses. I’m not sure it features every single footpath in the UK, but it is definitely comprehensive. I’ve found loads of crazy places near me that I never knew existed.
2: Listen to music
Music has a huge effect on our moods. If you want an instant lift, listen to upbeat music. Listen to the following two songs:

Jesus He Knows Me – Genesis
These songs elicit different emotions in people because of the chords they’re both played in. Hearing the name of the first one (Wonderful Life), you’d think it was meant to be an upbeat song, but it’s played in a minor chord. Minor chords tap into our emotions in a way that tells us something is wrong. This song feels sad and depressing because it’s played in a minor chord (it’s still a good song though).
On the other hand, the second one (Jesus He Knows Me) sounds upbeat as heck because it’s played in a major chord. Major chords are upbeat and make us feel happy. If you listen to the actual lyrics, you’ll realise it’s a critique of televangelism and megachurches.
If you’re in a bad mood, and you want to be in a happy mood, then listening to music played in major chords can be a great way to instantly improve your mood.
Music also has other features that affect mood. For example, the beats per minute (bpm) can affect how energetic you feel. This is why runners like to listen to high bpm music. It helps them time their footfall and it helps them feel energised.
3: Accept that bad moods are part of being human
But sometimes the way out of a bad mood is to let it all out and have a good cry, and for that, sad songs will help.
Sadness is important because it’s often a message from your emotions that there’s a problem that you need to deal with. I don’t mean long term depression here – that’s something you need to talk to your GP about – but sadness that is transient, e.g., someone you care about said something mean to you, or you failed your exam interview.
Being sad about something someone said to you could show that you need to be more assertive, or better at explaining to the person that they’ve hurt your feelings. The second may be there to teach you to prepare better for your next exam or to get help from your teacher.
Clearly, this is an oversimplification, but you get the idea: emotions are a way that you communicate with yourself. Understanding them can go a long way in helping you overcome some of life’s problems.
The idea that bad moods are important and we need to accept them is the premise behind the film, “Inside Out”. Give it a watch. It’s designed to teach children that it’s OK to be sad sometimes, but some of us adults might need that lesson too! Especially because we live in a world where we’re told we should be upbeat and happy all the time – something that’s impossible to do.
